EU Pet Passport Travel Checks

Reviewed by Vet Travel Docs on 17 September 2026. Official requirements can change; the linked government sources remain authoritative.

A valid EU pet passport can support non-commercial movement of dogs, cats and ferrets between EU countries and, when the passport qualifies, travel from the EU to Great Britain, Switzerland or mainland Norway. Our €12 check applies the rules to the direction, species, dates and destination you provide.

Journeys covered

We support ordinary one-pet journeys between all 27 EU Member States and from each EU Member State to Great Britain, Switzerland and mainland Norway. Northern Ireland is handled as a separate destination overlay rather than being treated as an EU Member State.

What we check

  • passport issuer and recorded passport details;
  • pet and microchip identity information;
  • microchip and rabies-vaccination chronology, age and waiting period;
  • rabies validity on the relevant entry date;
  • owner or authorised-person movement dates; and
  • dog tapeworm rules where the destination requires them.

This is a document-readiness check, not authentication of the physical passport and not border approval. Carrier acceptance, signed owner authorisation, national breed controls, unusual territories and return travel remain separate.

Switzerland and Norway

Switzerland requires the recognised passport, microchip and valid rabies vaccination and prohibits importing dogs with docked ears or tails. For Norway, dogs normally require veterinarian-administered Echinococcus treatment 24 to 120 hours before entry, except when travelling directly from Finland, Ireland or Malta. The alternative continuing 28-day treatment regime is disclosed but is not automatically approved by this service. Norway also has prohibited-dog rules, requires travellers to contact Customs at the border, and applies separate rules to Svalbard.
